About
Anna is a figurative painter whose work is rooted in memory, reflection, and a search for peace. Drawing from contemporary figurative painting and Japanese minimalism, her practice brings together the present and the traditional to create something quietly timeless. Through intimate, suspended moments, she explores connection and presence, conveying not exact likenesses but the inner essence of her subjects. Each figure evokes a sense of home, defined not by place but by the people we love.
Working primarily in oil and acrylic, Anna uses a grisaille process that begins with monochromatic underpaintings to establish gesture, atmosphere, and emotional tone. She then builds depth through transparent oil glazes, allowing saturated color and radiance to emerge within the figure while surrounding spaces remain minimal and abstract. These void-like backgrounds allow the figure to become both subject and setting, shaped by memory and imagination.
Anna’s work is deeply personal and often centers on family and loved ones. Growing up across Indianapolis, Shanghai, New Zealand, Taiwan, and California shaped her understanding of home as something fluid and relational rather than fixed to a single location. She balances representation and abstraction, love and emotional intensity, with an underlying sense of calm and quiet. Through each painting, Anna seeks to honor personal relationships while reaching toward something universal.
Anna is currently pursuing her BFA in Painting at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where she continues to refine her exploration of color, connection, and presence in contemporary figuration.
